No Win. No Playoffs. No more Vermes, please.

By: Herschel | October 5th, 2009

Yes Kansas City played better yesterday than their last game against Colorado; yes they could have won to keep the slim playoff hopes alive. But NO we didn’t win; no we didn’t finish off a team that played almost 70 minutes a man down and missing one of their best players; no, we aren’t that much better with Peter Vermes than we were with Curt Onalfo; and no Peter Vermes should NOT survive the house cleaning that should take place in KC this offseason.

KC seemed to dominate a lot of the run of play on Sunday but it translated into absolutely nothing. A Kamara shot off the post (which isn’t considered a shot on goal) and Zoltan’s goal were the only dangerous plays that translated into something. Meanwhile, Brian Mullan and a 10 men Dynamo squad managed the game as they needed to, and actually took the lead when Mullan danced around Michael Harrington for what seemed to be hours before sending a cross from the right side that was missed by at least 3 KC defenders before Luis Angel Landin just tapped it in for the lead. Landin, who Jonathan Leathers forgot existed, scored his first MLS goal.

KC continued to move the ball but with little success against the 10 man Houston. We had little attacking power, where Josh Wolff looked his age, and Kamara looked alone up front. Add to that the fact that “The Coach” still has a man crush on Davy Arnaud and Jack Jewsbury who are in line to the “where are they now” award since their real selves have not been sighted since around week 8 of this season. They have had poor form, have contributed little, and at this point I see them as players taking a spot from youngsters that cannot do any worse. Maybe the time off will do them good and will lead to a better 2010.

Back to the game: In the 73rd minute a very nice cross from Lopez to Zoltan (who will not stop running while on the field) finally ended in the equalizer, which still “keeps us in the playoff hunt”, as some MLS writer I’m sure will make note of. The truth being that the slight glimmer of hope that was left from last week has now been extinguished, and we can now start looking towards 2010. Also, I don’t know about you guys, but the fact that we have “a 4 game unbeaten streak” as the KC Wizards website says, really does not make me feel any better about missing the playoffs; of course I could be suffering from the “glass half empty” syndrome but who could blame me at this point in the season.

It’s noteworthy to mention that Vermes again brought Chance Myers into the game for a brief appearance that reminded me why I think “Ryan Leaf” when I see him, since it appears that he has also lost the power to make semi-decent crosses (passes?), which in my book was all Vermes was asking for when he started using him a few weeks back. We also saw a glimpse of Roger Espinoza on the bench, which quashed the rumors of him running away from KC, while we still have no news on why, steady starter Hercules Gomez did not make the trip to Houston. Three defenders, 2 midfielders, and one forward on our bench; good to see we were going all out to win this game.

Here’s a suggestion, since it’s over, why don’t we play Kamara and Zoltan up front and use a couple of youngsters in the middle and give that a try. Will we really miss Arnaud, Jewsbury and Wolff that much? Wolff hasn’t scored in 2 games so probably his hot streak has come to an end again and it will take him about 6 or 7 games to get on another one so just for fun let’s see a change.

All in all we tied a game we should have won leaving 3 games in this disaster of a season. All I can hope from On Goal is that they actually shed some dead weight from the team and maybe start by getting someone in the front office that can make some good player-personnel decisions, because, honestly Peter Vermes is not the man. I know he’s well liked here in KC, I know he won a title here in KC, but that means nothing when it comes for finding talent and running a team, and his 3 years here and the players he has brought in prove that. Hey, if those were the only creditials to get a front office job imagine all the players the Yankees would have working with GM Brian Cashman.

While 2007 was a year to remember, 2009 is a year to forget. But lets face it, this is KC, where Chief’s GM Carl Peterson was finally fired after stinking up the place for years, and the Royals are the Royals; do I really expect that On Goal, a business with few soccer people at the head, will fire their top soccer man after this season? The answer is no. Too bad though, since the mess that we are in is mostly Vermes’ fault because his stint as a coach has proven that Curt Onalfo really didn’t have that much to work with.

No highlight available. Sorry.

    Hey:
If I was making the money he was making, (actually making the money I’m making now) if the project/product I put together had less than a 50% success rate, most of the employees I brought in were busts and I couldn’t deliver a product with some quality I’D get fired or at least should, and I don’t even work in an entertainment area. Wizards fans are the most loyal fans in KC bar none, but there is a limit.

I think you call for people to get fired when they should get fired, when they don’t deserve to keep their jobs. Re P Vermes, I think he hasn’t done well, hasn’t produced good results and his staff-players haven’t offered any good results. This year the team won’t make the playoffs, but last year they did just because the league was very mediocre.
So yeah, he deserves to get fired.

I will agree that Vermes needs to be fired. I wanted him fired more than I wanted Onalfo fired. Vermes is the reason our team is full of aging wash-outs and not young up and coming talent. And when they try to bring in a designated player they fail miserably. And that is all on Vermes.

You’re an angry little man. I knew there was a reason I barely visited this blog. You’re not even semi-objective. It’s just fire this person, fire that person, bench this person (which I agree, Arnaud must be benched), bench that person. One second you scream for the older players to be benched, the next minute you bitch when Vermes actually puts a a young player like Myers on the field, which is it?

Honestly would you be happy seeing this lineup out there?
    Kamara – Kraus
    Espinoza – Zusi – Myers
    Morsink
    Harrington – Besler – McKenzie – Marquess
    Pardo

Please, I’d at least like to save some dignity and that lineup is going to lost 4-0 easily.

What’s this about Espinoza running away from KC?

How did Sam do? No cheap shots at him this time? I was a bit late for work today. Should I be fired?

Robert, he might be an angry little man but you need to step away from the blue Kool Aid. You must love the MLSNET.com post that love applauding how we “saved a point” or “have a 4 game unbeaten streak” when we are OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS because we needed a win.
At least this guy and Mike Kuhn call it like they see it. If you want the company story go to the hillcrest blog or the Wizards website. I watched a Mexican soccer channel yesterday and even today, when Mexico is 1 point from making it to the WC they are ripping the team for poor performance. Soccer will grow in our country when coaches and players are held to the same standard that we hold players and coaches from other sports.
By the way, regarding Myers, he has proved nothing and is close to being a bust, but I would like to see him play a full game where we can really see what we have with our younger players so we can clean house or see what we keep. You know do what a succesful team like Houston does, where if they are missing 4 starters they can actually get a competitive team on the field. Can you imagine what would happen if we had 4 starters out and had to field kids that have played only a few minutes during the year? Does losing against Chivas or DC in the next few weeks matter? We might get a higher draft pick, not that it might mean anything.
Yes, let’s keep playing Wolff and Arnaud and Jewsbury and Hirsig when we know what they can do? That will really help when we need players off the bench.
Too much blue Kool Aid. You must be of the bunch that must still think we’ll make the playoffs.

    @ Robert:
Sorry you don’t agree, I call it like I see it. Yes he should be fired like anyone who cannot do their job.

You must have not gotten the point on Myers; he is not playing well and hasn’t since he’s been back; that being said I would love to see him in his natural position in the back and not where Vermes plays him since he did show some promise last year before he got hurt. When your team needs to win and score goals you don’t take only 1 forward and play Myers as a winger, it’s not good for him or the team.

I would like to see the team play the young players since it’s good to see what we have in Reserve so we don’t throw players like McKenzie in the line of fire with almost no minutes and then complain when they don’t play well. I could care less if that’s the reason we lose in the next few games. Not much left to salvage this season. The Red Bulls are doing it and they have actually found a couple of nice prospects while dealing with their growing pains. I just feel that beating DC will mean little (although I would like to beat that “punk Montero).

The Espinoza comment was due to the fact that after being a regular either on the bench or the team he was pulled for about 4 games with no news of why. No he did not run away, but him being abscent was puzzling, although I do believe he brings more offense that Myers.

BTW 6′3, 210 lbs, not little angry man, bigger angry man when we can’t seem to move forward and there is little to salvage from this season.

Oh, and thanks for taking the time to come around the blog and read it.

@ Nathan: The FO screwed up in that game against Dallas and Sam came out talking about the “perks STH get” when they were called out on it instead of taking the “mea culpa” route. If they don’t get called out on mistakes they will be bound to repeat them. Plus, I did write the story with the permission and at the request of the people affected by the FO decision. If the Chiefs or Royals would have done that it would have been all over the news. Yes the FO does nice things for the STH but that is one of the incentives to be a STH, since as a STH you pay in advance and are kind of stuck with how good, or in KC’s case this year, how bad the team does. I didn’t see refunds to STH’s for the 1 goal in 8 games stretch. To come out throwing that out is a pretty cheap shot.
Nothing personnal against the FO or Sam, they have done great things and those are made public everywhere (just go the the Wizards website), but things like this need to be brought out. Not everyone reads Big Soccer forums; so this was for the few that read me and for Robert who although he almost never comes around, might have missed the story.

Please, stop ragging on Robert. We in KC see someone who plays .500 sports as a success. Chiefs have lost 27 of their last 29 games (.093); and the Royals close in on 100 losses every year. One team that approaches .500 is a blessing.

You want to see what we have in reserve, go out to practice or to a reserve game. I saw plenty of McKenzie to know I don’t want him anywhere near the field. Same with Pardo, Morsink, and Kraus.

As for Espinoza not appearing, he only started 1 game under Vermes and hasn’t been there since, you don’t think Vermes just doesn’t see in him was Onalfo did, or is that too little of a conspiracy theory?

John, not being completely anti-Vermes like many of the people here does not mean that we are “drinking the blue Kool-Aid”. It’s funny how if anyone finds anything positive they ar labled kool-aid drinkers. I read Mike’s write up on the game and while it was critical he also talked about positives from the game. Is he a kool-aid drinker?

Dave: It’s fine with me, if they are not good enough they need to be part of the house cleaning; although does it matter that they play now when we are out? If those 4 should leave let’s throw Myers, Marquess and a few others and go look for something else.

I still think that there are a few reserves that could be serviceable backups. Just because they don’t shine with the Reserves doesn’t mean they are that bad, just look at the talent around them. You can’t judge them using that standard since it doesn’t balance out; case and point Rafael Marquez with the Mexico NT has sucked forever but he’s a top defender with Barcelona; it’s different when you have good players around you than when you have subpar ones. But I digress. I know some people like Robert want to finish off with “dignity” what is left of this season, but dignity doesn’t let you evaluate talent for next year. Dignity went down the drain with the 6-0 Dallas game and the scoreless streak we put together.

BTW I’ve been to quite of those Reserve games and when they play the Brass or UMKC very few players shine and just off the top of my head the best goals I’ve actually seen came from Abe Thompson and Morsink and even Jimmy Conrad actually screwed up a play that led to a goal once. If that’s the measuring stick we’re using we made a huge mistake letting go of Ryan Pore.

Funny you mention Espinoza since he’s a Vermes-Onalfo draftee, if he’s not “that good” we can tack him on to the list of “botched” talent acquisitions they can be blamed for; I personally like his style of play.

Espinoza may have issues related to his red-card run earlier in the season. Agressive play is not the same as agression in general. But I am only guessing. Thanks for the lively insights from a fan’s perspective. Certainly goes a long way in nurturing passionate devotion. Keep the ball rolling. Cheers!

Now after a 2-0 loss against Chivas, what do people still think of Vermes? Hopefully they’ll cann him and the new coaching staff will have some good off-season time to review current players, study draft and plan a good preseason and future seasons.
Plus, you can’t really compare how the players do with the reserves to how they would do in a regular season game. I rather watch 10 under-25 players give it their best for a spot next season, than the same lineup that left us where we currently are at.
