Best Change for the Wizards?

By: Morpheus | April 20th, 2011

There have been several changes to the Wizards this off season.  And now that we have a few games under our belt I think it would be a good idea to talk about what might have been or will be the best change so far.  Is it the addition of Omar Bravo, Milos Stojcev, or C.J. Sapong?  Or maybe the name, colors, or kit changes?  Maybe it is the new stadium or the addition of Cal Williams in the broadcast booth?  I think all those are great but I think there has been one acquisition that tops all of those so far this year.

chad-ochocinco-soccerI think the best thing the Wizards did was bringing in Chad Ochocinco and giving him an honorary membership!  He might not be the best soccer player on the team but he has provided the mationwide marketing spike on the same level as David Beckham.

I know that Ochocinco won’t help us win any games, or bring home any trophies.  Hell, he probably won’t ever see playing time with reserve teams let alone make an appearance on the first team.  He isn’t going to make anyone else better.  But he has made Sporting KC a national name.  And he has the potential to influence someone to purchase a t-shirt or even a ticket to a Sporting KC game.  Chad Ochocinco has put Sporting KC on ESPN’s Sportcenter.  He has caused Sporting KC to make headlines on local radio, television programs, and newspapers.  And best yet he has moved Sporting KC to the top of search engines and social media like twitter.

I would love to wow you with statistics with how many tweets SKC and Ochocinco have been in together, or how many more hits SportingKC.com has received but I would have to buy some of that information and I don’t have that kind of cash.  But, what I can tell you is that the day Ochocinco announced that he was coming to tryout for SKC all of the local news programs on TV used this as one of their top stories for the day.  This is huge when most of these same news outlets won’t even show the score of the latest Wizards game let alone highlights of the game.

Sporting KC has become as well known, at least in the US, as teams like DC United, LA Galaxy, and NY Red Bulls.  With the NFL’s popularity Chad Ochocinco has single-handedly put SKC on the map.  Now it is up to Sporting KC to keep it going and build on this new partnership and use Chad Ochocinco’s influence to bring in casual fans to SKC.
