Claudio Lopez signs as DP
By: travis | March 8th, 2008It’s now official. Lopez has signed on the dotted line, making him the Designated Player for the Wizards this season. Not sure what the details are, but I think I remember reading that it was a two year deal. I’m checking around and I’ll update any details I find. A quick blurb from Hillcrest includes pictures and the fact that Lopez will don the #7 jersey. Press conference will be held in Argentina on Monday to officially introduce him.
An extremely good signing with risks involved. First though the good. Lopez gives the Wizards a tested striker who can make people forgot about Eddie Johnson very quickly. His veteran presence will also take some of the pressure off of the younger players who are still trying to carve out a niche in the league.
And now the bad. As exciting as this is, I can’t help but think of the point that Dave brought up quite recently over at MLS Offside. Is Lopez coming here to retire? A Spanish website has an interview with Lopez. My Spanish is a little rusty, but the good people at Down the Byline posted their thoughts on Lopez plus a brief translation from the article:
The part that worries me, is that Lopez is already starting to think about retirement and his life after soccer. “Son mis últimos años en el fútbol” basically translates to “These are my last years in soccer.” Not a good sign to have your soon to be designated player already looking towards retirement. Hopefully he already realizes that the league isn’t a push over and that he’ll have to work in this league. Otherwise this DP signing will turn out less like Juan Pablo Angel and more like Denilson.
Will the Wizards get a player like this one?:

Great striker, I still don’t know why America, as much as I hate them, let him go.

So weird, he’s going to be so culture shocked living in Kansas City. I mean, he played for some of the biggest clubs in the world. And now he can walk down the street and no one will even know who he is.
This is probably the signing of the season. I’m jealous. I won’t lie.
