Conrad, Johnson to make victorious return to camp.

By: Michael | February 10th, 2007

Fresh off of a wonderful 2-0 win over Mexico, Jimmy Conrad and Eddie Johnson will return to the KC Wizard’s training camp next week.

The win was particularly sweet for Kansas City, as Jimmy Conrad notched his first international goal (off a Landon Donovan corner) - setting the tone for the rest of the match - and Eddie Johnson looked sharp as a 65th minute substitute, putting a long-range shot on goal soon after coming in. I was particularly pleased to see Conrad getting first billing in the media ahead of Donovan. It’s nice to see some new faces for Team USA. Conrad continued his vocal ways after the game: “It was great. If we are really going to test ourselves, these are the games the critics say we need to have. We are still three-and-a-half years away from a World Cup, but this was a great step in the right direction for Bob (Bradley) and for our young guys to get some valuable experience.” He also added: “I think we showed what we’re made of.” I’m inclined to agree.

I am also pleased to see Bradley returning the support, and it seems as though Conrad will play a major role in the Bradley era of USA Soccer. “Jimmy is a leader on our team,” Bradley said. “He was very, very motivated to play against a player like Borgetti. In those match-ups you understand that the tone is set early. It’s important for him and it’s important to our team to see that that is the way we need to play the game.”

TRAINING CAMP UPDATE:
From the sound of the official training camp updates, things have been picking up as more of the roster is filled up. A few people have returned from injuries and now with the faces of the franchise, Conrad and Johnson, returning, the team will be looking to really set the tone for the season opener on April 14th - a difficult away game at DC United. Two months until the season begins is less time than it sounds…
