Eddie Johnson to Boca Juniors?

By: Michael | March 29th, 2007

Fresh off their trip to Argentina, it seems as though if Boca Juniors had their way, one of the Magicos would be there to stay. The article (posted on BigSoccer.com) - written in Spanish - basically states three things:

1) Boca Juniors usually looks to Asia (e.g. Japan) for their foreign flair and global marketing opprotunities. They now want to tap into the US market (good luck).

2) They’re interested in Eddie Johnson, the underachieving striker (cheap transfer fee? untapped potential? word hasn’t gotten around to Argentina?).

3) The correct Spanish translation of Kansas City Wizards is “el Kansas City Wizards”. RIP “Los Magicos”.

I think the one way this could be a good idea for the Wizards is if they sold Johnson and used the transfer fee to buy a more reliable striker. Scott Sealy is a good scorer, but needs a partner who will be able to share some of the scoring responsibilities. For now, we can all hope Johnson will break out of his funk… but without him or a replacement, we’re down to Ryan Pore and company, youngsters with talent but absolutely no proven ability. I’m tempted to say that even Pore is more of a sure goalscorer than Johnson these days, but I’ll give Eddie some credit.

Has anyone even pondered the fact that there would be a small small chance of replacing Eddie with Robbie Fowler if both transfers went through? Obviously getting rid of EJ with assumption that Fowler would then land in KC instead of Columbus is a bit assumptive, but it could happen.

Can’t a Wizards fan dream?

They must not have watched him play the last 10 times for the US team. He has been less than stellar. I’d take Fowler for Johnson in a heartbeat.

I don’t think Curt Onalfo will want to part with him so quickly. Eddie is a really exciting player, he has a lot of potential, but he sucks at finishing. If you’re the new coach (or the new organization), you want at least to have a crack at being the one who can finally turn him around.

As a fan of the Wizards and the US MNT, though, I hope that Boca offers a transfer deal that MLS can’t pass up.

Is this an early April fools gag? You’re more likely too see him on Nick Jr. than Boca Juniors! C’mon!

Just show Boca those five games when Johnson looked amazing and it might happen. For the other 90% of the time just say the tapes are missing.

You never know though, maybe a change of leagues could do him good. Then again, there are a few other players that have done so and failed. Boca knows what they are doing, they are a big enough team and I guess sees potential in him.

Please! Boca Juniors does not need or want Eddie Johnson! They do not recruit players from the US (who would want them? The US does not have a decent team and there is no one they would need! Furthermore, Argentina does not take players from Asia either…have you even looked at their roster in the last few years? Not one Asian player, not one US, why? Because they don’t need them. The only players that are not Argentine, come from neighboring countries like Paraguay or Uruguay, and at that, only make up about 1% of the team.

Check your facts and keep wishing that Argentina might ever want a US player…what a joke, the US buys Argentine players past their prime and an overpriced, near retiring Beckham…that’s the talent the US has to offer??? Sad, sad, sad.

Hey Vero, thanks for commenting, especially on such an old post. You bring up a few things I’d like to adress:
    1) “Boca Juniors does not want or need Eddie Johnson” I think you’ll find in the language of my article that I agree with this statement, though

    2) “Check your facts…” I think if you read the linked article you’ll find my synopsis to be rather accurate in nature. While my Spanish is by no means perfect, the article certainly wasn’t written by Cervantes, either.

    3) “…and keep wishing that Argentina might ever want a US player.”: I trust you’re not as blatantly Argentina-centric and pompous as this comment comes across, but give me a break. To suggest that teams like Liverpool (Friedel earlier in his career), Manchester United (possible deal with Parma for an American player), Celtic, Manchester City, Fulham, Club Brugge and others all have an interest in or active use of American talent while no club in Argentina could possibly be even interested is absurd. I understand your assessment of our national team, especially after we sent what was practically our second string down to the Copa America. I understand your pride in Argentine futbol. But your blanket statement comes across as foolishly egotistical.

That said - thanks for visiting the KC offside!
