Home sweet home
By: travis | June 11th, 2008Ah yes, the old cliche that always appears after any long trip away from home. And after six games, two months, one win, three losses, and two ties, the Wizards come back to play a home game at Community America Ballpark (or as I affectionately call it, the CAB) this weekend against the Crew.
The road trip hasn’t been pretty. It started off well against the Fire, with a Jack Jewsbury goal the key in a 1-0 win over a team that has been consistent all season. Hard to believe that was also the last win of the season – and it took place on April 20th. A strong Kevin Hartman performance had helped keep a clean sheet, and it seemed like things were on the up and up for KC. However, the follow-up performance left a lot to be desired, as the Wizards midfield turned the ball over a number of times in a 2-0 loss at Toronto. The officiating on Amado Guevara’s first goal left something to be desired, but there was no questioning Guevara’s superb free kick from the same game that put the game out of reach. The follow up from that was a 2-1 loss to the Crew in Columbus, as two defensive lapses negated a great game by Kevin Hartman. After that was a draw at New York, as a late strike by Danleigh Borman thwarted what looked like a Wizards victory. Up next was the Galaxy, and I won’t even mentioned a player who scored a goal from far away. It was lucky. And of course, the last game against RSL was a pretty exciting 0-0 draw.
So that’s been the Wizards the past two months. Away from home, from the Cauldron, and the comforts of the converted baseball field. A turnaround needs to start right now if there is to be any hope of making the playoffs. Six games lie between now and the All Star break. Half at home, half on the road. At least 12 points is a must; anything less and any hopes for the playoff will be much dimmer. On the other side of that, there is still a long way to go.

The officiating left nothign to be desired on Guevara’s first goal…it was perfectly legit. Might have looked off during the run of play, but any inpsection showed it was a perfectly good goal and just a defensive blunder.
I think you should have said “the defending on the first goal left a lot to be desired.”
