Kansas City Acquires Santino Quaranta from Los Angeles
By: Michael | June 25th, 2007
Yeah! We're teammates now! Woohoo!
The LA-KC transfer relationship has once again yielded a player-for-pick transfer. This time, the Wizards have picked up Santino Quaranta from the Galaxy, probably for a mid-level draft pick... perhaps even the same pick LA had before acquiring Shavar Thomas.
The drama unfolded very quickly as it became known that LA was trying to dump Quaranta due to the lack of need for a forward after acquiring Edson Buddle, Chris Klein, and... wait, what's his name? Oh yes, a Mr. David Beckham (some on-again, off-again starter from La Liga... an England international I believe). They decided that rather than a young American starlet turned question mark, they'd like some money in their pockets... or at least 60k or so more. So they began shopping Quaranta, hoping to get something for him rather than facing the burden of filling out all the paperwork it takes to waive someone.
Kansas City, on the other hand, is looking for some depth up front and seems to remember the days when Santino Quaranta and a young man by the name of Eddie Johnson roamed the attacking third together as members of America's International Youth Program. Onalfo and co. have apparently determined the upside of the reunion is worth the money and a roster spot, and have pulled the trigger, as reported by the Kansas City Star and – huzzah! We made “FanNation”! – forwarded to the world via SI.com. The over-under on MLSNet reporting the deal is currently set on 4 and a half months.
If the Galaxy indeed receive the draft pick in return, a compilation of recent LA-KC deals looks like this:
LA Receives:
D Shavar Thomas
1 Draft Pick
KC Receives:
GK Kevin Hartman
F/M Santino Quaranta
Advantage: Wizards.
As far as I’m concerned, Quaranta represents the possibility of a young, steady presence up front that we have lacked with Sealy’s absence from injury/recent rusty form. Onalfo has proven he has the ability to find a way for wayward young talent to begin to produce again, and if he repeats the feat with Quaranta, this move may spark another surge in points for the Wizards. If things go poorly, we could be left with more question marks than before.
