Lopez rumors swirl as team lands in Buenos Aires
By: travis | February 28th, 2008The preseason drama continues. Will he? Or won’t he? The he in question is of course, Claudio Lopez. Negotiations have been “close” for about a week now. And seeing that Monday rosters must be compliant with the salary cap. According to Soccer America, this means that deals should be done by Monday.
While that would be ideal, Brad Porter writes that it would take 2-3 months before Lopez would join the team. This would be a blow for the Wizards, seeing as the season kicks off in 30 days or so.
Things to keep an eye on besides Lopez:
- It’ll be interesting to see how the team adjusts to the new 3-5-2 formation. As soon as a schedule is out for the Argentina trip, I’ll post it along with results.
- Ivan Trjuillo will also join the team in Argentina
- For kicks, to see how Kevin Souter devlops with the team. Will he realize every kid’s dream and make a professional squad? We shall see. A quote from Porter’s blog illustrates part of the thinking in bringing a player like that in:
Souter represents the Wizards adjustment in approach in consistently bringing in new players to push their current players. This season, if a player falls into a lengthy lull in production or lacks in training, the team will not hesitate to bring in new players for looks who may “inspire” the current players to elevate their games.
Good to see that from the Wizards. They won’t stand to see their players get complacent. A competitive intent from Day 1 is definitely a positive.
