New Coach!!! Not Really
By: Herschel | November 10th, 2009In a move that probaly shows that the Wizards Front Office might know money but doesn’t really know that much about soccer, KC has removed the title of “interim” from Peter Vermes and now he is officially…, wait for it…, wait for it… the new head coach of Your Kansas City Wizards..
Applause, ticker tape, confetti, streamers… (Upon further review, please hold the steamers during the excitement, remember, we had an incident with streamers a few weeks ago, so to avoid any issues with security do not use them, even if handed out by FO personnel…)
We need to celebrate!!! Forgotten are the times where he and Curt Onalfo brought failed international players. Forgotten are the times where we could not field a potent and steady squad that we could count on to either score constantly or at least make our home field advantage count. Forgotten are times where we scored only one goal in 8 games. Forgotten are the times where players were penciled into the lineup because of their name and not for how they actually did on the field. That is all forgotten.
Seriously. The day after many of us rejoiced that a professional team in KC finally had the balls to make the right personnel decision and get rid of a locker room cancer, the Wizards give us the news that one of the guys who could not make us competitive is given yet another shot. It’s bad enough our baseball team is full of Atlanta Braves rejects (you doubt this? Pena, Pena, Davies, Chen, Mahay (gone), Colon, Cruz, Farnsworth, Lerew, and Anderson) now we decide to let this “experiment continue”?
Yes, the team showed the slightest of attitude improvements with Vermes, but definitely not enough to warrant this. Were there just no other candidates available? Is it because the expansion draft is close? and if so, don’t we all really not have an idea of who we are protecting? The Wizards President could have put that list together. I know, it’s a 2 for 1 deal: take 2 positions: technical director and head coach and only get paid for one. I know what you must be saying: “it’s the economy, stupid”, don’t you get it? Well, I guess you’re right, I should have seen it.
Three wins, 6 losses and 3 ties means that he earned 12 points out of a possible 36: 33.3% (counting all his games Onalfo actually had a 35% production this year) Can I petition to get a job where I am only right 1/3 of the time? Add to that the fact that according to the KC Star there will be “a roster overhaul” this offseason. This of course means that after a 2 week analysis Vermes has figured out that it was the players who took us down this path of failure.
I knew it!!! It wasn’t Vermes or Onalfo, it was the players; it was all their fault; but wait, wait a second… aren’t these the players THEY brought in when they cleaned house in 2007? I’m just saying…
Oh, well. I know the truly hardcore faithful will be there with their Season Tickets, but honestly I will be hard pressed to convince the economic leaders of my home that the financial effort is worth it for season tickets since it seems that the on the field product will probably be about the same (and yes Sam, I know there are those season ticket perks you have spoken about that try and offset the goal-less streaks and the sucky play and the indecision of whether we will have a stadium in the next decade and the occasional screwups from the FO when it comes to stadium experience which could make up for the fact that my money was paid in advance, regardless of how the team does). Still it’s a tough sell.
Still, for those of us who will now probably only be the occasional once a month stadium fan there’s always Metro Sports, the kid’s projector and the dark basement; throw in some FIFA 10 background team chants to try and make up for it and we can give it a try. Yes, it’s not the same thing but at least I can change the channel if the opposition puts in the 4th or 5th goal.
So, am I pessimistic about next year? Like Sarah Palin would say: “YOU BETCHA”

This is the worst thing that I could see on a day when I saw a good canidate for the job just become available. Darren Ferguson (Yes, Sir Alex’s, manager of ManU, son) has just been let go at Peterborough United, a Championship 2nd Division team. This of course would have taken some money to get him to leave Europe, but it would be great to see a young coach come in here and be given a shot. Not someone one that has proven over 3 years that he can’t get it done.
Oh well. I guess I will just have to find another team to root for in next year’s playoffs.

Should have put that first, could have saved me 5 minutes. Anyone that that easily will give up on “their” team isn’t worth reading.

That’s not a point on the economic factors, but that you’re so quick to quit just because “the on the field product will probably be about the same”.
And please, Darren Ferguson? You were NEVER getting him out of Europe. And you’re right he was manager of Peterborough, a team currently at the foot of the Championship.

-

Dan I think you are being a little harsh on your first comment. Just because someone can’t afford season tickets that doesn’t make them a hardcore fan. If you remember correctly Carl Peterson made a comment about the only true Chiefs fans were the season ticket holders and he got torn to shreds in the media and by the fan base.
I would be more willing to give Vermes a chance at coach if he hadn’t have had 3 YEARS to improve the team and he couldn’t do it. There has been a decline in play for 3 YEARS and Vermes was the one finding the players. So, if you are such a die hard, hardcore fan why don’t you give some reason why the guy that has had 3 YEARS to improve the team should be given another try.

-

And I know that it would be hard to get Darren Ferguson out of Europe but it would have been nice to see the front office try to get a coach that could improve this team.
And yes Peterborough is at the bottom of the Championship 2nd division, but they had also been promoted twice in 2 years.

Did I ever say I was happy with Vermes? No, not even once. I’m NOT happy with Vermes staying on as coach, but the Wizards are my team and I’ll be there. My problem is with Herschel seemingly giving up on the team because they aren’t improving.

-

My main issue is that Ferguson knows 0 about the way this league is run, and I have serious doubts that he’d want a technical director above him making player many personnel decisions. He strikes me as a guy that would want more control, and in a league with as many rules as MLS you want a guy that knows them in some authoritarian position.

-

As for a person in place of Vermes, I thought Colin Clarke should have gotten a look. Yes it’d be a return to more of a “bunker bob” style, but he’s proven with Puerto Rico that he can win.

-

@ Herschel: Nice insight. Although I don’t agree with everything you write most of the time, this time you nailed it.
Well Dan, I am so glad that YOU can afford to get your Season Tickets. I am not a STH but I am no less of a fan.
Is Carl Peterson’s middle name Dan by any chance?I am sure that when it comes to spending money in this economy season tickets for a sport, for some they don’t crack the Top 10 on the list of priorities. As far as I know Herschel never said he wasn’t going to watch the game, only that because the product is not that good he might pass on going to every game.
I am in a similar situation, but it doesn’t mean I won’t be tuning in to watch them. Suddenly soccer fans are only those that “go to the games”? Wow, aren’t we the elitist snob.
It actually was kind of refreshing to hear someone not “follow the party line” and just do the “smile and wave” when it came to Vermes being named. BTW he said their was going to be a roster overhaul so you know if things don’t go well the first excuse is going to be “it takes time to get the new players in sync”.
Bunker Bob soccer? Is it any better than being the team that may not “play” that system but end up not scoring and be one of the worst offensive teams. It’s looking like a long season.

You know Colin Clarke could have been a good fit. We can’t score goals anyway so why not just play defense for 90 minutes.
I just wish the Wizards would have taken the time to look around for someone to be manager. Even if it was just for show it would have at least looked like they were trying to improve.

Wow, looking forward to that exciting brand of soccer that we saw at the end of the year. LOL.
What is incredible about all these forums is that if someone raises hell or criticizes what the team/FO does (like the guy who writes on this blog)people right away scream “that is why everyone says KC is such a bad sports town”. “You are not a fan”. “I’m not going to read you”. Whatever!
Those are the dumbest comments someone can make. First of all I don’t think this guy gets paid for writing here. Second of all, if he does write here is because he is very interested in the team and follows it religiously; probably more than the people that comment on it; he follows it more than I do.
Also, I would think that if I pay for tickets to a show, an event, etc, I expect the product to be good (I’ll drop that requirement to acceptable for our teams in KC) and that has not happened. KC’s percentage performance has been 45%, 47% and 37% in the last 3 years. Granted in KC sports realms that is outstanding, but who says it’s acceptable? Are we that in love with mediocrity?
I love all 3 sports and watch the teams’ games as much as I can. I watched every Wizards game this year and went to 10 home games, but sorry to say THE PRODUCT does not justify the expenditure of my house funds. It’s like saying that I’m going to buy farm products from a local grower that doesn’t put out a good product just to help the local economy. That is stupid.
Put out a good product or accept the consequences and what the critics have to say. That is the nature of sports. 30,000 people signed the online petition to get rid of Lousy Johnson; if the Wizards had that amount of followers online I think Vermes would be out of a job. The only steady fan base for the Wizards is riddled by infighting.
The Wizards FO put a team together that didn’t work, and instead of looking for a better solution they just make minor changes and keep trudging along. We are so scared of losing our team here that we are afraid of pushing for more action from the team; we are afraid that if we boycott the stands the team will pick up and go to Saint Louis. I can only hope that if we ever get a stadium we can start putting some more pressure on the FO when the team sucks, since the investment in the stadium will keep them grounded in KC, for a while at least
BTW, nice post.

So what would we expect from a roster overhaul? what is the benchmark by which a program is considered successful? Making the playoffs, not hobbling into them, was the mark a few short years ago. CO did that as expected while slowly building and maintaining a core group of players. He worked EJ back into the lineup and producing goals. PV has a big task ahead of him and a lot of risks to take. The first big test will be draft picks or trades. Let’s see how serious he is about roster overhaul.

-

I have several problems with the decisions taken by the FO. First, it was Vermes who picked these players, so we can expect some more of the same for this “overhaul”. Also, I would have liked a little concern from the FO, like expressing “yes, we named him head coach, but we are expecting good results…” or “PVermes knows another season like the last is not acceptable”, something that will put some weight on PVs shoulders.
I rather see a team worried about rebuilding, with new names, new management, young players, new stars, but trusting that in 2-3 years it would perform well in the playoffs, than just a cut&paste job that Vermes will be doing right now.And for those that always think that coaching in the MLS is too hard/special/whatever, soccer is soccer. You live by the results and the performance of your team. Yeah, the admin part is different and tricky, but all leagues have their quirks, but that’s small stuff compared to the realities of coaching a pro soccer team. You’ll be successfull in some place, and suck big time in others. PV hasn’t showed he can improve the team, either by drafting or getting out to get new players, or by coaching the team he helped assemble.

@Dan:
Hey, I’m not quitting on the team; please read the whole post; I just said that if the quality is not there I will not reward the team with my money; I will give it to Time Warner when I pay for Metro Sports because I will follow the team on TV, but not with money for ST. Does that make me a “bad fan” who “quits” on the team? Not in my book
So having a team in KC gives its ownership the right to put a substandard team on the field? I don’t think so.
We live so scared that they are going to pick up and go somewhere that we allow teams to hover in mediocrity and give them our money so they don’t leave. Let me tell you something Dan, neither my STs or yours, or most STHs, don’t make or break the Wizards. If someone in STL right now gave them a better deal on the stadium (or a stadium itself)On Goal would be gone in an instant. Yes, they would use the excuse of “no fan support” but that would be bogus because the fan support for years has been pretty much the same, maybe even better.I know the word fan derives from fannatic but we will never hold a team accountable by openly criticizing them in forums, you do it by not giving them what they want: fans in the stands (baseball would be the exception due to revenue sharing). You might to spend you money on STHs even with a crappy coach/TD, but I’m not; I will watch the games at home or online; that doesn’t make me less of a fan.
Hopefully things will change but unless the FO gets someone who knows the ins and outs of player scouting, talent evaluation and the “business of soccer” it will be a trial and error slow process. Vermes might know his youth soccer, but just because he was a “star” here doesnt’t mean a thing; if that was the case George Brett would be the Royals GM and Len Dawson would have Scott Pioli’s job.
Are the superstars really the best ones when it comes to coaching? Survey says: in most cases they aren’t, which is why listening to Vermes’ resume as a soccer player means squat. I’d like to hear what he has done as a TD or a Coach; oh yes, nothing.
