Oh my sweet Carolina

By: travis | June 24th, 2008

So I never wrote anything else about the draw at Toronto. So here it goes: Scott Sealy, it was a darn shame to see you miss a header while unmarked in the box. Bummer. Kevin Hartman came through in the clutch; what else is new. Good to see a shutout from the D after last week’s embarrassment at the hands of the Crew. Unfortunately, the net could not be found to save anyone’s life. To make matters worse, San Jose scored against DC, which means they pull into a tie with the Wizards for the least number of goals scored. For shame.

Well, now that’s out of the way. On to the real news - the Carolina Railhawks edged out Real Maryland in the US Open Cup second round. This means that on July 1 the Wizards will head to WakeMed Soccer Park to take on Carolina for a spot in the quarterfinals.

While just about nobody pays attention to the US Open Cup, I wonder how Coach Onalfo will treat the match. KC has been bogged down in a major offensive slump, having failed to score in the last three games. Do you give your attackers a rest, let some younger guys get a chance to shine, or do you go for it and try to build some confidence against a weaker (although maybe not by too much) side? For instance, if Claudio is given a long run out, grabs a goal or two, that give the team a shot in the arm. I hope that Onalfo unleashes the hounds and goes all-out on the attack. This team has already proved that they can play defense. Now it’s time to get the offense going.

Actually, the Railhawks edged out Real Maryland, a USL-2 club. The Charleston Battery beat the Charlotte Eagles and got themselves a home tie with the Dynamo next Tuesday.

And Carolina’s backline was pretty shaky on a recent road trip. Onalfo would be a fool to bench his main strikers for this one.
