Robbie Rogers Lotto and a Fuji Friendly
By: Michael | March 8th, 2007Two bits of ancillary news from the world of the Wizards:
1) Despite absolutely no announcement of such that I can find on MLSNet, today there will be a lottery for the rights to sign newly-unemployed US U-20 national Robbie Rogers. The word on Rogers - who left the University of Maryland to join Dutch side SC Heerenveen is he is a forward/attacking midfielder who plays both wings, favoring the left. If he’s a young midfielder who can take on the role of playmaker up the left, I would almost be willing to give up my left kidney for him to end up with the Wizards.
I say “almost” because Rogers could be a flop. Despite the Dutch side’s claim it was Robbie’s idea for him to leave, pro clubs aren’t in the habit of just giving up players who are solid gold. SoccerAmerica says that Rogers “never broke into Heerenveen’s first team and the club has released him.”
SoccerAmerica also identifies Toronto FC as the likely landing point for Rogers, but as one TFC fan points out, signing Rogers might be a wee gluttonous for the club. There is also the matter of their already using the first-up status of an exhibition team to get Conner Casey, if I’m clear on the MLS’ rules. If this is true, the Columbus Crew would have the best odds in the lottery (assuming they enter) and the Wizards would have second-best odds. Here’s crossing my fingers we land a new young talent!
…and a little something for those of you keeping score at home: the last time MLSNet mentioned Rogers’ name was one January 21st, following his involvement in U-20 action.
2) Kansas City will apparently be taking part in the Fuji national team’s US tour. The tenative date is April 17, three days AFTER the season opener in DC. If the date is confirmed, look for a reserve-heavy roster to be playing the Pacific islanders.
