The Wizards are alive in Sporting KC

By: Morpheus | March 30th, 2011

When the Wizards changed their name to Sporting KC I was a little upset, but I quickly got over it.  I kept telling myself that the ownership group will still embrace the Wizard name as a nickname.  Then I started talking to other people in the area.  The response I got was not as optimistic as expected.  I got responses from casual fans asking me “What kind of name is Sporting?”  And I got comments from diehard soccer fans saying this name change was just “dumb”.  I would try to explain to everyone that this name will make more sense in 20, 30, 40 years when the ownership group has had a change to fulfill their vision for the club.  I mean really Sporting Portugal is a well respected club that has been around for over 100 years so why not Sporting KC?

But here is what I really want people to think about.  Why can’t Sporting KC still be known as the Wizards?  Think about some of the biggest teams in the World all of these teams have nicknames that are used on televised games around the world.

Manchester United = Red Devils
Real Madrid = Merengues
Chelsea = Blues
Barcelona = Culés
Arsenal = Gunners
Inter = Biscioni

There is no reason that Sporting KC couldn’t have the nickname the Wizards and I didn’t even bring up national teams.  But, it is up to the media and the fans to push this idea.

By using the Wizards and Sporting KC synonymously then others will start using the name and it will start to catch on everywhere.  Eventually it will infest the front office and then the owners.  And at that point with the team being known as both Sporting KC and the Wizards there will be no reason not to accept the Wizards as their nickname.

That is why I am asking everyone that reads this to help me spread the word.  All of the people that don’t like the name Sporting KC; all the people that like the idea of the team being known as “wizards” on the field join with me in keeping the Wizards alive within Sporting KC!

    There are definitely a number of particulars like that to take into consideration. That may be a great level to deliver up. I offer the ideas above as basic inspiration however clearly there are questions just like the one you convey up where a very powerful thing shall be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around issues like that, but I’m positive that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both girls and boys feel the impression of only a second’s pleasure, for the remainder of their lives.

    good article!

    as you can tell by my name, im a red bulls fan, but i support your effort!

    in some ways, we’ve tried to do the same thing. we red bulls supporters still call the team “the metros” in a lot of our chants, although some people have changed them to say “red bulls.” i think wizards is great as a semi-official nickname and sporting kc is great as the official name of the club. your new stadium looks fantastic from the pictures ive seen, the new kits look great, and omar bravo is looking to be one hell of a player!

    can’t wait to beat… er… play you guys!

    I have been browsing on-line more than 3 hours lately, but I by no means found any interesting article like yours. It is beautiful worth enough for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made just right content as you did, the net might be much more helpful than ever before.
