The Wizards meet a real live Magico; We may have played a scrimmage.
By: Michael | March 19th, 2007Other than a rather lackluster split-squad performance against Argentinian first division club San Lorenzo, there are really only two things to report in Wizard-land:
1) The Wizards met their real-life counterpart. Though perhaps it is a less exciting story than if, say, the Chicago Fire were to have a run in with their team nickname, Kevin Hartman’s blog reveals that the Wizards met a real live Magico in Argentina:
After the game and an appearance on Argentinean TV, we had a barbecue at the house of one of the promoters for our trip. We were well taken care of and the food was great. After our meal, a very good magician gave us a show. He made more than a few players look quite silly. After the meal we headed back to the hotel and got some sleep.
So I guess the moral of the story is that being a KC Wizards makes you no more magical than being a Houston Dynamo makes you… erm… dynamic. Is there a moral in the story somewhere here?
2) We might have played another scrimmage. I say might because there is absolutely no press release on the matter… however, in Hartman’s latest blog entry (”Fun in the Sun”) he mentions life as an injured goalkeeper:
Even when the rest of the team was dismantling Nuevo Chicago, a first division side, I was putting in interval work on the track. I’m not sure how fast I was going, but I do know that I was running two minutes at around 175 beats per minute, and then one minute at around 160.
While Davy Arnaud was scoring his second goal of the game, I was about halfway through my 30-minute session. The game went really well and we played some of the best soccer we have so far this preseason. That’s very promising.
From this we can glean: Yes, Virginia, the Wizards really did play Nuevo Chicago (as scheduled); KC apparently won handedly, with Arnaud leading the way; Being an injured goalkeeper in the preseason seems very boring.
Perhaps this information needed to be vague so that the MLSNet censors wouldn’t crack down and take all real information out of his blog entry; perhaps he was obliging to my previous plea for some real information on kcwizards.com; Quizás, Quizás, Quizás…
I’d like to apologize for a bit of mis-information in my last post. I had misunderstood an article and thought the Wizards were about to play Boca Juniors last week. Instead, it was San Lorenzo, and the Wizards will be watching Boca before wrapping up their Argentine Tour. Send all your hate mail c/o the Los Angeles Galaxy Offside, for no other reason than to give Laurie some troubles other than getting her 10 bucks worth from the MLS.

I am convinced that the Wizards must not have a PR person on staff. They should give Hartman the role. He does a better job spreading team news as the team does. Thanks for connecting me with his blog.

Oh, Michael. What can I say but: “It is a genuine honor to get your hate mail. Truly.”
Oh, and: “Yes, MLS coverage sucks.”
But in the absense of actual news, think of the public service that you and I are performing. It totally warms my little heart to be able to give something back to the world.

Oh, P.S. I do actually know how to spell “absence.”

Spoke just a bit too soon, the Wizards ate it at the hands of the Boca Juniors.

Ouch… thanks Rob, I guess I was on the money with the Boca scrimmage (except for perhaps its timing).
Hate mail can still be sent to Laurie, of course.
