What is the reason for the Wizards scoring drought?
By: Herschel | July 16th, 2009KC just cannot seem to get going with the scoring. After the 3-1 victory at home against New England over a month ago we have been less than stellar when it comes to finding the back of the net. Any ideas to why things have gotten this bad? Vote and/or leave a comment.

I wanted, very badly, to vote for slump, but I think it comes back to a lack of impact players that compliment each other. Lopez and Wolff with a big linking player (maybe it’s Zoltan?) could do some very interesting things running without the ball. Maybe Gomez could too. But when they don’t have that linking player, they all try to run with the ball on their feet. Which, given the relatively similar skill set of most MLS players, that one-on-one game doesn’t really work.

They need more team speed. EJ gave them that element but did not have the supporting cast that they have know.

What happened to the offensive-minded players we let go the last year or two: Victorine, Movsisyan, Sealy, EJ’s DP, any others? And what did we get in return? I can understand how a player must choose the best option for their situation and potential. But it seems we have gutted a lot of our striking arsenal we once had not too long ago. I don’t envy the jobs CO and PV are tasked with. Getting the best product with the resources available is not always easy. Maybe we need to take a hint from other stadia and go crazy in the stands to motivate our team to play inspired footie. The twelfth man’s impact can easily be overlooked. Keep doing what we are doing, just go crazy.

Victorine was getting older and slower, we needed to get younger. Movsisyan wanted to start more (and is leaving after this season anyway). Sealy had already stated a desire to leave MLS before we traded him last season, so he was already as good as gone, may as well get something for him while you can. And EJ was going to Europe no matter what.

This could be a lack of an impact player but that doesn’t explain why we could score goals earlier in the season. I the team is just in a slump.
But, I will say if the team doesn’t start playing like a team and make smart, accurate passes this slump is only going to continue. I am tired of this “lets just kick the ball down the field and hope that Wolff and Lopez can run onto it” mentality.

Morpheus:
I agree completely with your comment. Last Saturday we had more of the same. The midfield seems to be bypassed 90% of the time for the long ball. Then again, as a defender, do you really give the ball to midfielders that have been on what could be called a “passing slump” or go for the less risky option.
