Wizards Decide to Add Another Question Mark to 2007.
By: Michael | March 27th, 2007A great way to keep fans on their toes is by making your roster as uncertain as possible three weeks away from the beginning of the season… or at least this is the strategy OnGoal seems to be employing by trading solid center-back Shavar Thomas to the LA Galaxy for a 2nd round pick.
Thomas was the answer to the question “What the heck will we do when Jimmy Conrad is gone to play with the USMNT?” A 26yo Jamaican defender, Thomas has been solid in that position before. Many Wizards fans believe he has the talent to start elsewhere, but we weren’t really eager to see if that was the case. The second round pick does mean we have five picks in the Superdraft next year (plus one for both Thomas and trading Alex Zotinca to Chivas USA, minus one for getting GK Kevin Hartman from LA), but it also means we’ll have to rely on untested youth to replace Conrad once he goes off to play with the national team.
Perhaps to help ease fan’s worries about our usually strong back line, the Wizards made Jack Jewsbury’s flirtatious relationship with right back a full-blown reality, but it still leaves definite replacement for Conrad.
So why’d we let Thomas go? Looking around BigSoccer.com and a few other fan sites, here are some options:
1) To open up a roster spot (for an attacking midfielder?).
2) To open up a senior international spot (probably not true, considering moving Zotinca already gave us one open).
3) Because Thomas wasn’t a fit under Coach Onalfo (no evidence to suggest this).
4) To set up the signing of the century from Europe who’s right about to ink a deal with the Wizards (heh… right).
In the end, however, we’re left once again scratching our heads in the land of Oz and hoping our front office knows more than we do.

One thing is wrong with the your beliefs as to why Shavar was traded. Zotinca did not take up an SI slot. He was a discovery pick and has his green card.

Ahhh yes, it was van den Bergh. My point remains the same, we already had an SI slot, so this justification for trading Thomas isn’t valid.
